³² And John ^(A)bore witness: ^(B)“I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and ^(C)it remained on him. ³³ I myself did not know him, but ^(D)he who sent me to baptize ^(E)with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, ^(F)this is he who baptizes ^(G)with the Holy Spirit.’ ³⁴ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son^[a] of God.”

^11 (A)“I baptize you with water ^(B)for repentance, but ^(C)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you ^(D)with the Holy Spirit and ^(E)fire. ¹² His ^(F)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and ^(G)gather his wheat into the barn, ^(H)but the chaff he will burn with ^(I)unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

^13 (J)Then Jesus came ^(K)from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. ^14 (L)John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” ¹⁵ But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. ¹⁶ And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, ^(M)the heavens were opened to him,^[a] and he ^(N)saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; ¹⁷ and behold, ^(O)a voice from heaven said, ^(P)“This is my beloved Son,^[b] with whom I am well pleased.”

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

2 When ^(A)the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. ² And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like ^(B)a mighty rushing wind, and ^(C)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. ³ And divided tongues ^(D)as of fire appeared to them and rested^[a] on each one of them. ⁴ And they were all ^(E)filled with the Holy Spirit and began ^(F)to speak in other tongues ^(G)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

⁵ Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. ⁶ And ^(H)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. ⁷ And ^(I)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking ^(J)Galileans? ⁸ And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? ⁹ Parthians and ^(K)Medes and ^(L)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, ¹¹ both Jews and ^(M)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” ¹² And ^(N)all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” ¹³ But others ^(O)mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

¹⁴ But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. ¹⁵ For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, ^(P)since it is only the third hour of the day.^{[b] 16} But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

³⁷ Now when ^(A)they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, ^(B)what shall we do?” ³⁸ And Peter said to them, ^(C)“Repent and ^(D)be baptized every one of you ^(E)in the name of Jesus Christ ^(F)for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive ^(G)the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For ^(H)the promise is for you and ^(I)for your children and for all ^(J)who are far off, everyone ^(K)whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” ⁴⁰ And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, ^(L)“Save yourselves from this ^(M)crooked generation.” ⁴¹ So those who received his word were baptized, and ^(N)there were added that day about three thousand souls.
